ALUMINUM WIRE IS A SERIOUS PROBLEMMANY FLORIDA HOMES ARE HIGH RISK FIRE HAZARDS |
| The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has determined that homes built, or rooms added, and circuits rewired or added between 1965 and mid to late 1970's may contain aluminum wiring. CPSC research conducted shows that homes wired with aluminum wire are 55 times more likely to have one or more connections reach "FIRE HAZARD CONDITIONS" than homes wired with copper! See the following link for the actual text from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). |
 | This photograph is of an aluminum wire that was silently cooking ready to burst into flames in a Florida home. Note the top wire was white. It is almost burnt black. The little bumps are from being so hot the insulation was actually boiling!
The home did not have any noticeable problems. The owner read about the problems with aluminum wiring and ordered the problem fixed with the CPSC recommended CopAlum System. He could have saved his home and more important his family.

The CPSC recommends only two fixes for this problem, replace the aluminum wire with copper (not practical most of the time) or the Tyco Amp CopAlum connection. Some electrical contractors and even inspectors will recommend Copper to Aluminum twist on connectors (the purple wire nuts) or replacing devices with ones rated for aluminum wire. CPSC tested these methods and they eventually failed. New devices do nothing for joints only the attachment to the device. The wire above was located in a junction box hidden from view with no device installed.
Let people know about this problem. You could save a life. Knowledge is power pass it on.
